Welcome New Members

I wanted to focus this issue on new members now that we are starting a brand new ski club year. Many of you are new to the club this year, or may have joined in the last year but may not yet feel like you are in the full swing of things yet. As you may already have figured out, a great deal of our members don’t even ski at all! But even if you did join the club specifically for skiing, you don’t have to wait for that first ski trip to share some camaraderie with your fellow members.

The KOPSC Activities Committee tries to keep the non-ski activities and socializing going every week, all year long. It never ceases to amaze me how such a large, random group of people came together in this club, primarily to ski, and wound up becoming a relatively close knit group of friends who genuinely enjoy each others’ company in all types of sports, activities, vacations and parties.

When I joined KOPSC 10 years ago, I didn’t know a soul in the club. I was single, just moved to the area, and joined in order to take advantage of a group ski trip. I was a bit overwhelmed (and intimidated) by the number of members, all of who seemed to know each other quite well. Like an awkward kid on my first day of school, I wondered if I was going to “fit in”. My first KOPSC experience was showing up for outdoor tennis, somewhat nervously, hoping the “other kids” would play with me! The handful of other members who showed up to play that night couldn’t have been nicer or more welcoming! Next, I went on a KOPSC sponsored hike; same thing! I finally got up the nerve to walk into a bar by myself for my first KOPSC happy hour, and though I still didn’t know the majority of people, the few that I had met through other activities made me feel very comfortable and at home among relative strangers. Someone suggested I go to a “Dine Around”. I did, and met even more people, which made me even more comfortable to pursue other events and activities on my own, which led to meeting even more people, some of whom I now consider to be very dear friends. I even met my husband on a dive trip that I coordinated for the club. I eventually wound up leading the Dine Arounds myself and served for a year on the board. I volunteered to chair the Activities Committee several years ago because I wanted to be sure the members continued to experience all the benefits of the club the way I had. While skiing will always be the heart of this club, I believe the activities are the spirit.

So with that said, welcome new members! Please join as many of our planned activities as you can, or feel free to talk to me about a new idea for an event, or anything related to the ski club you may want to know. My goal is to ensure that your experience will be every bit as rewarding as mine has been!
